jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

area shaded region will be equal area of square minus area of these 2 semicircle - can you calcule it now ?

OpenStudy (nitroster):

I may have gotten it. It looked tricky, I'm just not absolutely sure. You know when teachers don't go through everything.. lol

OpenStudy (nitroster):

48?

OpenStudy (nitroster):

oh wait, I didn't use PI

OpenStudy (nitroster):

13.7?

OpenStudy (nitroster):

And thanks for helping me btw :)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

64 - (3,14*4^2) = 64 - 3,14*16 =64 -50,24 = 13,76 units squared

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

this is area of shaded region

OpenStudy (nitroster):

well, using 3.14 but not PI :P I have a calculator to do actual PI

OpenStudy (nitroster):

Thanks a lot! so ya, I did 64 - PI x 16 in my calc and got 13.7345... its 13.7 :)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

but do you understand it now ?

OpenStudy (nitroster):

Yes, ill show u how I got my answer.... area of the whole was 64... 180/360 * 4PI^2 = 2880 / 360 = 8PI x 2 = 16PI.... 64 - 16PI = 13.7

OpenStudy (nitroster):

180 was from half the circle.. 4 was from the radius being half of the diameter(8)... the x 2 is because there is 2 of them.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes right
