I have never read this book but I am guessing that it's the absence of any heart that makes them have a lack of emotion.

I believe it's C. It makes most sense to me since it's lack of emotion.

The best thing to do is to eliminate which options sound the silliest. :P
I've never read the book, but I've seen the movie (which is amazing btw) and I have a big picture of which answer seem the most silly. :)
