OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

Part A: Find a rational number that is between 5.2 and 5.5. Explain why it is rational. Part B: Find an irrational number that is between 5.2 and 5.5. Explain why it is irrational. Include the decimal approximation of the irrational number to the nearest hundredth.

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

what two decimals are between those two?

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

5.3 and 5.4

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

are those rational?

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

yes

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

yes that is correct

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

so whats the answer for part A?

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

you can pick either one of the numbers you said

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

ok ill pick 5.4 and can you explain to me why it is rational

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

make sure to put in your own words - A rational number is a number that can be written as a ratio. That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator (the number on top) and the denominator (the number on the bottom) are whole numbers.

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

ok but thats like from google i want to understand it in your words so its easier for me because that definiton is just too difficult

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

i want to understand it in your words

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

so it either has to be a whole number like 3 or 4 or 56 - or a whole number in both the numerator and denominator|dw:1459580291294:dw|

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

is this a good answer for part A? A rational number between 5.2 and 5.5 is 5.4. 5.4 is rational because a rational number has a decimal representation that terminates or that repeats in a pattern.

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

@rebeccaxhawaii

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

?? :)

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

not exactly

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

can you fix it for me then please? :)

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

5.4 could be written as a mixed number of 54/10. 54 and 10 are both whole numbers making 5.4 a rational number.

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

ok!

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

thx :)now can we move on to part b

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

post part b in a new thread this one is filled i would have to keep scrolling

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

ok :)
