Nora Zeale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God was part of a movement known as the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920's/ Harlem was the center of African American cultural identity. Its politics, art, literature, and music expressed the rebirth of the African American spirit; the “New Negro Movement” was born in the minds of its poets and in the hearts of its common people and was expressed in music, essays, artwork, and dance.
