I need some help ASAP!! Medal for best answer! Question linked in comments.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The total amount is going to be: fixed amount of $2 plus amount per pin

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

B=(0.10+2)x

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@rachelg1456 You wrote "B=(0.10+2)x" Would you care to explain your answer instead of just giving it?

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

@mathstudent55 @Cammie_1D5SOS I found it was this equation by adding 0.10 and 2 then multiplying it by 52. Since the total she would be raising per pin is 2.10, you take that and multiply it by the total number of pins (52) to get an answer. therefore the answer to your question is B=(0.10+2)x

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

1. Giving out answers without explanations is not helpful in teaching the poster how to solve the problem. 2. Giving an the incorrect answer with no explanation is even worse.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok, @rachelg1456 Thanks for explaining, but let me show you why your answer is incorrect.

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

then what is the right answer to find the total then? this question is common sense

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. for goodness sakes my algebra 2 teacher just looked at this and found the correct answer is the answer I gave her.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The amount of money is $2 as a fixed amount. Then there is an additional $0.10 per pin. That means you start with $2, no matter how many pins you knock down. Then for each pin, you get an additional $0.10 For 1 pin, you get $0.10 * 1 For 2 pins, you get $0.10 * 2 For 3 pins you get $0.10 * 3 etc. For x pins, you get $0.10 * x That total is the fixed $2 plus the amount you get for the pins, so the total is B = 0.10x + 2

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@rachelg1456 You wrote B = (2 + 0.1)x That is the same as B = 2.1x That means you get $2.10 per pin. That is very different from getting a fixed $2 plus $0.10 per pin. Your equation is giving the fixed $2 for each pin you know down. Now let's look at the specific case of 52 pins knocked down. Correct formula: We have x = 52, so B = 0.10x + 2 = 0.10 * 52 + 2 = 5.2 + 2 = $7.2 Your formula: We have x = 52, so B = (0.10 + 2)x = 2.10 * 52 = $109.20 I think you will agree that $109.20 is very different from $7.20.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@Cammie_1D5SOS Did you understand what the correct answer is and how to find it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK I see it now. Thank you

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@rachelg1456 Thanks for the explanation above. You did the problem correctly according to the way you interpreted the problem itself, but you misinterpreted the problem. The amount is a fixed $2 for participation in the charity fundraiser. Then an additional $0.10 per pin knocked down is added.

I just submitted the test and @mathstudent55 was correct. Thank you both for your help

You're welcome.

Now I'd like to know what Rachel's teacher has to say.
