Can you help? The path of a swooping bird is modeled by the hyperbola 4y^2 − 1,225x^2 = 4,900, where x is the horizontal distance measured from the point where the bird is closest to the ground and y represents the height of the bird from the ground. Hint: Assume that the origin lies at ground level. The bird is closest to the ground when its height is ________ meters from the ground

@Ms-Brains

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

The number you're looking for can be found by plugging in x=0 and solving for y.

MsBrains (ms-brains):

^^ What @agent0smith said. :)

OpenStudy (love_to_love_you):

Err I got about -17

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Show your work.

OpenStudy (love_to_love_you):

I took the root of both sides and solved

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

That doesn't show us what you did

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Taking the root should be one of the last steps, not the first

OpenStudy (love_to_love_you):

Aaah I did this all wrong let me try again

OpenStudy (love_to_love_you):

I got y=35, am I even close?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

I don't know, if you showed your work, then I could tell you...

MsBrains (ms-brains):

You're work needs to be shown. :)

OpenStudy (love_to_love_you):

I got rid of 1225, then I subtracted 4900 from both sides, I was left with this 4y^2-4900 = 0 4(y+35)(y-35) = 0 THenI used the zero factor principle and got y=35, y=-35
