Solving logarithm equations

OpenStudy (clamin):

\[\log_{2} (9x+5)- \log_{2} (x^2-1) =2\]

OpenStudy (jojokiw3):

So let's look at some logarithmic rules first. \[\log_a (x) - \log_a (y) = \log_a \frac{ x }{ y }\] And \[\log_a x = y \rightarrow x = a^y\] How can you apply these rules to this question?

OpenStudy (clamin):

on my equation i will divide (9x+5) and (x^2-1)

OpenStudy (jojokiw3):

Write out the full equation now, so I can make sure you have everything. :O

OpenStudy (clamin):

\[\log_{2} (9x+5)/ (x^2-1) =2\]

OpenStudy (jojokiw3):

Yes, so now apply the second rule I gave you. :D

OpenStudy (clamin):

2^2= (9x+5)

OpenStudy (jojokiw3):

What happened to (x^2 - 1)?

OpenStudy (clamin):

Its divide by (9x+5)

OpenStudy (jojokiw3):

Yeah so \[\frac{ 9x + 5 }{ x^2 -1} = 2^2\]
