Which was not a reason that a large number of young Americans opposed the war? Many believed that the United States couldn't police the world. Many believed that the war was gaining support in important parts of the world and the U.S. could withdraw. Johnson abolished college deferments for those not in good academic standing. Many believed that the war was basically a civil war that should not involve the United States.
@wwhitlock
The Counter Culture. Many wanted to look for an alternative to traditional living patterns. Hippies were a huge part of the reason war was opposed. During the 1960's many young people (the ones born during the Baby Boom) were now growing up. After growing up, they realized that they did not want to enlist in the draft, or have anything to do with war. So, many protests were made. For example, the Teach In Movement.
