Need help with simplifying square roots!

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

OpenStudy (phi):

count up how many "root fives" you have

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

3

OpenStudy (phi):

the 2 in front of the sqr(5) means you have 2 of them ditto for 3 and -1 means one less

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

so 2

OpenStudy (phi):

2 of them plus 3 more take away 1 how many do you have ?

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

4

OpenStudy (phi):

yes you have 4 sqr(5)

OpenStudy (phi):

it's like counting cows, except it's square roots of 5 but the same idea

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):

OpenStudy (neverendingcycle):
