why engineers do not optimized the volume of a cylinder ?

if we minimize the surface area we can use less material
but what's the benefit of maximizing the volume of a can ?

they are maximizing the "shape" of the can to get the largest volume for a given amount of material.
The way you use this result is you pick the amount of stuff you are going to sell, and decide how big the can has to be. Then you want to make a can with that volume but uses the least amount of material (because we don't want to waste money on the can)
