The "residual" in this case is the difference between the predicted and the actual (measured) y-value. Note that the order in which you do this subtraction makes a difference. I had to review "residue" through an Internet search to re-learn the definition of "residue;" " the residual of an observed value is the difference between the observed value and the estimated value of the quantity of interest."
