OpenStudy (aveline):

It sounds like you don't know when to use the imperfect and preterite. In general, you use imperfect when an action has no clear beginning or end. For example, "I wanted the candy bar." With preterite, there is a clear beginning and end. For example, "I bought the candy bar." You should read this: http://www.studyspanish.com/lessons/pretimp4.htm

OpenStudy (domebotnos):

http://prntscr.com/aq8k4w sorry it came out sideways but thats best ive got

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@domebotnos omg thank you!!!

OpenStudy (aveline):

Actually, a lot of those are wrong @domebotnos

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@Aveline can you please tell me the right ones then? :)

OpenStudy (aveline):

Well, for example, "I used to ride my bike all day long" would not be preterite, it would be imperfect. Do you know why?

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@Aveline cuz it's really vague. Just says "all day long"

OpenStudy (aveline):

Right. What about number 9, "the cat jumped out the window?" It would not be imperfect, as domebotnos said it would. Why?

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@Aveline he jumped out the window. end of story. nothing else happened it just ended right then and there.

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

so its preterite

OpenStudy (aveline):

Right again. What about "He was reading the newspaper?" Would this be imperfect or preterite?

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

imperfect. Doesn't say when he started or stopped reading

OpenStudy (aveline):

Right. What about number 7? This is a hard one.

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

Imperfect. Key word is "was"

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@Aveline

OpenStudy (aveline):

Correct again. It looks like you're understanding this well, so here you go: 1) I ran five miles yesterday. Preterite 2) It was four o'clock. Imperfect 3) He was reading the newspaper. Imperfect 4) She studied for two hours last night. Preterite 5) We went to Canada every year in the summer. Imperfect 6) I used to ride my bike all day long. Preterite 7) Wow! Was she angry! Imperfect 8) You arrived at the hotel in the afternoon. Preterite 9) The cat jumped out the window. Preterite 10) It was snowing. Imperfect 11) It rained yesterday afternoon. Preterite 12) He was wearing a black leather jacket. Imperfect 13) She wore a red skirt yesterday. Preterite 14) We lost the match. Preterite 15) We were so sad. Imperfect 16) They vacationed in Hawaii last year. Preterite 17) They usually vavationed in Florida. Imperfect 18) They never vacationed in Mexico. Preterite 19) Did you have to work last Saturday? Preterite 20) The dog ran after the mailman. Preterite

OpenStudy (aveline):

Let me know if you have any questions about the answers

OpenStudy (ashchu117):

@Aveline thank you so much!!!

OpenStudy (arbokas):

@Aveline you made a mistake in the last message 6) I used to ride my bike all day long. Preterite; but I know it is just a writing mistake.
