Which of the following gradients allow oxygen to leave the blood and enter body tissues and carbon dioxide to leave body tissues and enter the blood? High concentration of oxygen in the blood; high concentration of carbon dioxide in the body tissues Low concentration of oxygen in the blood; high concentration of carbon dioxide in the body tissues High concentration of oxygen in the blood; low concentration of carbon dioxide in the body tissues Low concentration of oxygen in the blood; low concentration of carbon dioxide in the body tissues

Gaseous exchange occurs in the lungs in the alveoli (air sacs in lungs). Here oxygen passes into capillaries (a type of blood vessel) and into the blood (into red blood cells in the blood where it binds to haemoglobin) and carbon dioxide leaves the bloodstream, diffusing through the thin walls of the alveoli and back into the lungs. It is then exhaled back into the atmosphere. Oxygen diffuses from the blood/tissue fluid into cells where it is used in respiration to release energy. Carbon dioxide diffuses back into the blood from cells as it is a waste product made during respiration.
