f ind slope of the curve = rise / run = (16-12) / (32 - 20) ( picking the points around the point (32,16) the taking the point (32,16) as (x1,y1) substitute for m ( the slope) in the general form y - y1 = m(x - x1) and simplify slope = m = about 4/12 = 1/3
yes i know how to do that part but isn't there another part
you just plug in x1 = 32 y1 = 16 into the above and simplify to get one of the choices .
oh I didnt use the 2 data points closest to the line but the slope i got was the same they wanted you to use the points (32,16) and (26 ,14) which gives you the same slope 16-14 ) / 32 - 26 = 2/6 = 1/3
i know the part of 1/3 i dont what the rest
y - 16 = (1/3) )x - 32)
first multiply both sides by 3 3y - 48 = x - 32
y-16=1/3x-32 +16 +16 y=1/3x-16/32
No theres an error in the first line the 1/3 multiplies everything in the brackets it s y - 16 = 1/3 ( x - 32)
y - 16 = (1/3) x - 32/3
i really dont get i just stuck can you work it out so i can understand it
ok lets go back y = y1 = m(x - x1) is the slope /point form of the equation of the line m = slope = 1/3 and we take the point x1 = 32 and y = 16 and plug these in y - 16 = (1/3) ( x - 32) OK so far?
yea
ok now theres a few ways we can proceed from here I dont like messing with fractions much so if we multiply both sides of the equation by 3 , the 1/3 on right side of the equation disappears So multiplying both sides by 3:- 3y - 48 = (x - 32) and we can drop the brackets 3y - 48 = x - 32
okay
3y - 48 = x - 32 +48 + 48 3y = x + 16 dividing through by 3 y = (1/3)x + 16/3
sorry guy i have to go right now
hope this helped
i'm back
