You could break this problem into 2 parts: 3 1/2 - 2/7 could be thought of as 3+1/2-2/7. Since 2/7 is less than 1/2, there's no need to "borrow." Next you need to find the lowest common denominator (LCD) for the fractions 1/2 and 2/7. Know how to do that? The LCD is the smallest number into which you could divide either 2 or 7 with no remainder.
