well to find out the area before he doubles the width you would multiply width times length so 5 times 9

then take that sum and keep it for later. Then you double the width which would be 9 so it would be 18 so now to find out the area after he doubles the width multiply 5 times 18 and that would be the area after he doubles the width so now compare the first area with the second and that's your answer
