Find the area of the following shape. You must show all work to receive credit. Figure ABCDEF is shown. A is located at negative 5, negative 8. B is located at 1, negative 8. C is located at 3, negative 5. D is located at 1, 0. E is located at negative 5, negative 3. F is located at negative 3, negative 6.

OpenStudy (kaylee04):

First get a graph and make the shape

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

I did

OpenStudy (kaylee04):

ok did you multiply length by width?

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

Im so confused is this a hexagon

563blackghost (563blackghost):

it does make the shape of a hexagon right?

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

yes

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

ok

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

wait where did that go

563blackghost (563blackghost):

sorry i had wrote the equation wrong let me type it right ^^

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

ok

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Use the equation... \(\Huge{d=\sqrt{(x_{2}-x_{1})^{2}+(y_{2}-y_{1})^{2}}}\) Choose two points that make a side length to find the side length.

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

ok

OpenStudy (jonathan5824):

just do this for all segments and add and thats the answer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hint: step 1) plot the points step 2) connect the points to form a hexagon. This will not be a regular hexagon step 3) break up the hexagon into triangles and a trapezoid (see attached)
