TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

All you need to know about the recent email that was sent to you. An email was sent from ops@openstudy.com a few hours ago, with a subject of "Please take a minute to fill personal information" The body of the email was http://prntscr.com/atzpcv Now, if you didn't get this email, don't worry! The email is not that important in saving your account! All you need to do is log out of your account and log in. Once you do that, you should get this pop-up. http://prntscr.com/atzpwb Just answer the question and press "Done." That's all! Your account is safe! Continued...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Can an account be deleted on OpenStudy? Yes, it can. The admins can delete an account and with that any information that was posted on this website. The admins aren't that cruel, however, so all they will be doing is resetting your SmartScore, something that can be undone. :) I didn't get an email! What should I do? You don't need to receive an email, as Jiggly said, to complete the survey. All you need to do is it to log out and log back in to your account. You will be asked a question when you log in about your date of birth. If you already answered the birthday question, then you might not get an email and you will not be asked to answer it again. I used a fake email address. What should I do? You can go to your settings and put in a real email address. OpenStudy does not send you any spam mail. You can choose what kind of emails to receive from OpenStudy also. But an email is not necessary to have in saving your account. I didn't get the survey! What should I do? This means that you must have completed it in the past and you don’t need to fill it out anymore. Enjoy! OpenStudy can afford to delete all your replies on posts since there are many posts where you have helped and these posts help bring in new users. SmartScores will be dropped instead. Now, your email is gone. But, you're still in the account! So you're safe for now! Your email is not necessary for you to tell us your birthday. All you really need to know is your password, and if you don't know that, then you need an email. If you know your password, log out and log back in. When you're logging back in, you'll be asked one question -- which is, What is your birthday? If you don't know your password, do the following: Go to http://openstudy.com/settings#/account Replace the email with an email you currently have Save the new settings Go to your email and verify it. Once verified, log out Once you are logged out, choose the option that says "Forgot password" Go to your email and create a new password Log in and take the one question survey.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

This is because Preetha's post is all cluttered. Please only ask any questions that have not been already answered on here.

OpenStudy (okdutchman7):

@Preetha @TheSmartOne I have not gotten an email, my email is not fake and I am not asked for credentials when logging in. Glitch?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Did you submit the Owlfred scholarship in the past?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

OS sends me spam messages. ;~; I've got 100+ on my new email and they're all just about someone replying to my questions or something even though I see those notifications on OS.

OpenStudy (okdutchman7):

@TheSmartOne I don't think so...

OpenStudy (okdutchman7):

@TheSmartOne Its been sorted out now. Thanks!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@Conqueror You can disable those emails in your settings.

OpenStudy (photon336):

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I got one of these emails yesterday. I responded to it, asking what possible need they had for my birthdate (*). No response. I followed the link in the email to see what would happen. Just took me to OpenStudy, without prompting me to change anything in my profile. So I posted a question here in OpenStudy feedback, which did not elicit an official response, only a deletion, but whoever deleted it didn't have the courtesy to contact me privately. Finally I tried editing my profile, but there's no spot I see on my profile page to update or supply birthdate information, so I filed a few bug reports about that and another bug I found in the process of attempting to comply. No response to those, either, of course. Outstanding work! (*) Ironically, COPPA does NOT require that OpenStudy know our ages, given that the Terms of Service specifically forbid users under the age of 13. In fact, the very act of asking for our ages forces OpenStudy to comply with COPPA! From the FTC website: So here’s the answer in a nutshell. You’re covered by COPPA if: Your website or online service is directed to children under 13 and collects personal information from them; Your website or online service is directed to a general audience, but you have “actual knowledge” you’re collecting personal information from a child under 13; or You run a third-party service like an ad network or plug-in and you’re collecting information from users of a site or service directed to children under 13. Interesting that they are only handling this now when the law was last updated years ago. OpenStudy's legal counsel works at the same pace as the software team, apparently!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@whpalmer4 Preetha said the purpose of collecting birthdays is "to know who are users are so we can develop new features better tailored for our users." Catching underage users seems to be another plus of this feature. To update or supply us with your birthday information, all you need to do is log out and log back into your account. When you are logging in, you will be prompted to provide the information. If you are not prompted anything when logging in, that means that OpenStudy already knows the information, and your account is safe. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. :)

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

"All I need to know" was "all I already knowed".

OpenStudy (wit):

It was actually "All knowed I already."

OpenStudy (anaise):

This sounds like dictatorship ;-;

alones (alones):

@alknowsall

alones (alones):

alones (alones):

^What was that o.o

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

I'm just curious as to why they bothered asking us.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

@whpalmer4 that response though xD

psirockin2 (psirockin2):

Actually, I just logged into my OS account and it prompted me to answer the birthday thing
