Why might a poor white Southerner who did not own slaves support the laws that kept slavery legal? A. The laws represented the independence and authority of their state. B. Wealthy plantation owners did much to improve the lives of poor white Southerners. C. Free whites depended on the profits from slavery to fund public education in the South. D. Slave labor made food inexpensive in the south and malnutrition was rare among poor whites. Please help!

I'm thinking it's the first one, but that's just my perspective on the matter. It did separate the South from the anti-slavery North, after all.
