I want to hear from you guys. Do you listen to music while you work or does it distract you? Does certain music help you focus more? Should you listen to music while studying for finals?

OpenStudy (g33k):

for school work i like to listen to calm, soft music. If i listen to pop or rock i start to get in a "dancing mood" lol and i cant focus on my work then because i wanna dance. But thats just me

OpenStudy (g33k):

some people say if you make up a song for your work you can remember it easier

OpenStudy (cecil_the_weasel):

It's true *for some*. I actually use that trick sometimes. Though more often than not, I use silly voices or go the early-gradeschool route and act it out. It's kinda dumb but I tend to learn kinesthetically and by association so I guess it works :P As for the music, sometimes I can get away with pop and rock music (I listen to a lot of Blur, Beck, and Jack White right now) but I have to know the album by heart so I don't put much effort into listening. I get a little too into the music sometimes and have to listen to something softer, usually without lyrics haha! ☺

OpenStudy (darryqx):

It really depends. Many people can concentrate with music. I try to be one of those people, but I know I truly do not. I even try to listen to slower songs or rain sounds, yet I still do not keep my focus. I am one who focuses more when there is complete silence and I am completely engaged with my work. I love music, but I cannot concentrate on my homework when I am listening to music because then I want to know what the lyrics mean and the backstory of the song or the artist, etc.

OpenStudy (darryqx):

And I also get into a dancing mood when I listen to rock and pop, but when I listen to softer music, I get into a singing mood, lol.

OpenStudy (cecil_the_weasel):

That makes sense. I know many people listen to nature sounds like the ocean or even just white noise but I find to be distracting. Whether I can listen to music or not really depends on the day. Some days it's fine, others not so much. I'm pitiful at multitasking so when I start thinking about the lyrics/noises/song-name I get very distracted haha!

OpenStudy (medo):

Well, it depends on the music that you listen, and how your body and brain react when you listen to music and how did you listen to it. For example, if you study by yourself, or with friends, if you are using headphones or not. All of these are factors.
