What were some of the best ways to make a living in the West during the mid 1800s? Explain why you think so and discuss which of those ways you might have chosen and why.

The people who made the most money in the early west were not the miners or the cattle folk but the people who supplied these people with the equipment and services they required. This extended to bar owners, prostitutes (or their pimps) and other providers of short term pleasure.

There were some cattlemen who lived very well (at least until the Great Blizzard of 188?, which had a devastating effect on the western economy).
