Why are a plant's stomata generally open during the day and closed at night?

The Stomata generally closes at night because CO2 is not needed and leaving the Stomata open at night would simply loose the plant water so it closes until the morning when it can begin to photosynthesise.

The Stomata will also close sometimes during the day, plants tend to go with the conditions of thw weather, such as humidity, light intensisty and Carbon Dioxide concentration, when the Stomata is closed the plant loses water and Potassium ions when it is open it absorbs that. Its not known how these function work entirely but, however, it does involve regulation of osmotic pressure.

Most plants require the stomata to be open during daytime. The problem is that the air spaces in the leaf are saturated with water vapour, which exits the leaf through the stomata (this is known as transpiration). Therefore, plants cannot gain carbon dioxide without simultaneously losing water vapour.
