The people running the study do NOT control what is going on. They are simply observers. They watch, listen, etc to what the people are saying. This is why this study is a survey.

if it was something like where 2 groups are formed, one group being the experimental group and the other the control group, then you'd have an experiment

the experimental group is where something is done to them (eg: a drug is given)

the control group is given fake treatment (a placebo) to make them think they're being experimented on. This is to deal with the psychological aspects of the study and to see if the treatment actually works
