Autism poem – Chloe Murphy
I am a hindrance to my teachers.
You may not understand me, or the way I think
You may not understand my reasoning for saying “Guess what” 1000 times.
I write my letters backwards and many times my numbers too
The one thing I don’t understand is why the teachers’ pay more attention to the “normal kids”
Or, why the kids call me Retarded and after that we move schools
I didn’t mean to scream what I just said
I didn’t mean to knock over that glass
I don’t understand why I’m treated like this
My brain works differently than other girls and boys
I get so frustrated so easily and my hands don’t follow directions
Addition doesn’t come easy for me
Learning how to count isn’t something I’ve been taught
I’m not proud to be autistic
It’s just something that happens to be
I am an upheaval for everyone.
