-When the amount if excessive an algal bloom may occur
-algal blooms can disrupt ecosystems homeostasis
-for example an algal bloom in a pond or lake depletes nutrient from the water and the decomposition of the dead protists can rob water of its oxygen causing fish and invertebrates to die

I'm not understanding how an increase in algal would deplete nutrients from the water and how the decomposition of it would rob water of its oxygen.

I dont really know anything about this, but i'm sure the algae change the chemistry of the water (what compounds are present). Find out exactly what the algae does (chemically) and you will have your answer.
