jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

In order to add any fractions, the denominators must be the same example: 1/8 + 3/8 = 4/8 the denominator is left alone and you add the numerators

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

This applies to algebraic expressions as well example 1/(x+4) + 3/(x+4) = 4/(x+4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to figure out the LCD and get the denominators all equal to the LCD This is one example http://www.mathportal.org/algebra/rational-expressions/adding-subtracting-rational_files/11.gif
