Please help! Will give fan and medal. On May 3, 1999, 59 tornadoes hit a certain state in the largest tornado outbreak ever recorded for that state. Sixteen of these were classified as strong (F2 or F3) or violent (F4 or F5). I have attached a picture below so that you can see the data table. Thank you in advance!
Will be ordered into: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 7, 9, 9, 11, 15, 16, 17, 17, 23, 40, 44 I am not sure how you would type it in but I would say that both 40 and 44 are outliers since they are drastically apart from the rest of the data. You could also have just looked at your answer for part (a) and predict that everything to the right of the box is an outlier.
@Scooby6363 is correct in saying that `both 40 and 44 are outliers ` here's how you determine this step 1) sort the data {6, 11, 4, 40, 7, 15, 9, 7, 17, 44, 1, 23, 17, 9, 16, 2} sorts to {1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 7, 9, 9, 11, 15, 16, 17, 17, 23, 40, 44} -------------------------------------------------- step 2) Find the median. This is the middle most value. The median in this case is 10 (it's between 9 and 11) -------------------------------------------------- step 3) look at the lower half of the data (below the median). Compute the median of this to find Q1. The Q1 in this case is Q1 = 6.5 -------------------------------------------------- step 4) look at the upper half of the data (above the median). Compute the median of this to find Q3. Q3 in this case is equal to Q3 = 17 -------------------------------------------------- step 5) find the IQR = Q3 - Q1 = 17-6.5 = 10.5 -------------------------------------------------- step 6) compute the lower fence L = Q1 - 1.5*IQR and the upper fence U = Q3 + 1.5*IQR. The upper fence in this case is U = 32.75. Notice how 40 and 44 are above this upper fence. So they are the outliers There are no values below the lower fence because L = -9.25
follow the same steps from before
Thank you both so so much! You were both VERY helpful in helping my understand this. I appreciate all the time it took in typing this up and explaining it. Thank you for helping me :)
I'm glad it helps
whiskers are most likely your outliers, center line is always your median
Thank you @latinC :)
