OpenStudy (jacob902):

If in quadrant II, what is ?

OpenStudy (jacob902):

OpenStudy (freckles):

use a Pythagorean identity or draw a right triangle you are going to have to use though that theta is in quadrant 2 either way (this is only to determine sign)

OpenStudy (freckles):

theta in quadrant 2

OpenStudy (freckles):

does this mean cosine is positive or negative ?

OpenStudy (freckles):

that is your second guess... are you just guessing? let's go through this slowly can you tell me if you think cosine is negative or positive in quadrant 2 ?

OpenStudy (jacob902):

i meant C

OpenStudy (freckles):

ok lol yes cosine is negative since we are in quadrant 2 and 1+(-4/3)^2=sec^2(theta) 1+16/9=sec^2(theta) 9/9+16/9=sec^2(theta) 25/9=sec^2(theta) 5/3 or -5/3=sec(theta) depending where theta is cos(theta)=-3/5 since we are quadrant 2 so yes
