WILL MEDAL (I already know the answer is not C) Nuclear binding energy is necessary to overcome which of the following? A) strong nuclear force B) kinetic energy of the nucleus C) repulsion of the protons D) weak nuclear force

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

@Abhisar can you help me? please?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hi Rachel!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Do you know what nuclear binding energy is?

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

@Abhisar hey! :) can you help me please?

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

yeah it is the energy that would be needed in order to take apart an atom into it's component parts

OpenStudy (phoevie-gregorio):

Thats right

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Correct! Now, we need to see what forces come into play inside the nucleus. First thing is repulsive forces between protons. These we don't need to overcome as they already try to pull the nucleus apart. But there is one other very strong force, actually the strongest type of force. The nuclear forces. These are attractive forces between the nucleons and keep them tightly bound.

OpenStudy (phoevie-gregorio):

so its A?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Sure.

OpenStudy (rachelg1456):

@Abhisar thank you so much! not a lot of people on here will actually work with you to help you find the answer yourself. I will keep you in mind next time I have a chemistry question :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

You're most welcome :)
