The Caste System’s Effects on Modern Day India The caste system has affected modern day India with poverty, politics, and health problems. India created a system that places people in certain classes depending on the class your prior generation was in. The castes dictate what you can, or can’t, do and how society will treat you. Although it is not a custom as much as it used to be, it still has affected modern day India in many ways. Depending on the caste you fall in, you may or may not be able to get a job well enough to live off of. The caste system also affects the politics in India and who you vote for. Certain genetic-specific health problems have arisen from the caste system. The caste system has caused a great percentage of Indians below the poverty line. The caste system that was established in India forced many people who belong in the lower castes into poverty. Many people are forbidden to hold any jobs because they are an untouchable, or someone without rights. As much as 220 million people are considered to be in the lowest class in India (Rao). The lowest class, “Dalits” (also known as broken people) are typically shunned from society. Many Dalits are forbidden to hold jobs because of them being “untouchables” and having no rights. Nearly twenty percent of Dalits are doing slave labor to pay off debts from their ancestors (Rao). Those who are in the lower classes and cannot hold a job aren’t able to pay for their basic necessities causing them to live in poverty the majority of their lives. Politics in India are decided majorly based on the caste of the politician and the caste of the voter. In some studies, the researcher has found that higher castes have less interest in politics than lower castes do (Sociology Guide). Researchers also found that voters are more likely to support someone in their caste rather than someone in an opposing caste. Indians vote for their own class, irrespective of the merits and demerits of the candidate (Sociology Discussion). The leader of a certain caste prefers to select people from his own caste when in office (Sociology Discussion). Politics can often be corrupt in India because the leaders will mobilize politics and principles through the ideologies of their caste. Also, the leaders are bound to give importance to the caste’s opinion. There are genetic-specific health problems, genetic diversity, and other issues all due to the caste system. Genetic diversity has declined in India due to Indians marrying only those in their caste (Healthlines). The mixing of various cultural groups in India occurred thousands of years ago, but has since declined as people began marrying within their social castes only. Due to intermarriage declining around 2000 years ago, Indians today will face genetic-specific health issues. When groups in India started following strict endogamous marriage, a consequence was a result of high incidence of genetic and population-specific diseases that are still increasing (Healthlines). These problems affect both lower and upper castes. Although India is becoming a much more powerful, diverse nation, it still faces many problems from the caste system put into effect by its ancestors. Nearly two-thirds of India are near the poverty line; a quarter of them being below it. The caste system keeps lower classes from being able to promote themselves to better, higher paying jobs, meaning they aren’t able to provide for themselves and live in poverty. Politics are also a major problem in India. The majority of Indians will support and vote for a politician in their caste, mindless of the merits and demerits of that politician. If, and when, a leader is chosen, they will often give importance to the principles and ideologies of their particular caste, causing problems for higher or lower castes. India also faces genetic problems due to endogamous marriages and low diversity from castes.
