Two years ago, on July 17th , General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer was forced to retire the army. This retirement happened because of a catastrophic event that led to many deaths and long term suffering. The massive destruction of a perfect empire was called the Amritsar Massacre. Many say that the cause of the destruction was that he suffered from arteriosclerosis. This statement was proven faulty when he had a brilliant performance at the relief of Thal. In fact, he did not develop the disease until after the massacre occurred. Therefore, he knew what he was doing and was capable of doing it. This chaotic, bloody, madness is the reason that we no longer have a strong empire. Some of these victims have to face pain from this tragic event for the rest of their lives. This is worse than death. Because of this, I believe that it was the right call to make General Dyer retire. Three years ago on April 13th, many people of India were “unaware of Dyer’s recent ban on public assemblies”(“The Amritsar Massacre”) which was declared a day prior. Because of this, these innocent people gathered in Amritsar, “India’s holy city of the Sikh religion”(“The Amritsar Massacre”), to celebrate Baisakhi. They were trying to just enjoy their day and then the unexpected happens . “Dyer arrived at about 5:15 p.m”(“Jalianwala Bagh Massacre”) with his plans to target people without warning. He ordered his riflemen to start firing. A junior officer asked,”shouldn't we issue a warning? Dyer says stiffly, they've had their warning. No meetings”(“Source 5”). This is when shots are fired and all you can hear is the sounds of “a mounted machine gun, buzzing noisily through the streets of Amritsar”(“Source 5”). “The firing continued for 10 minutes — all of 1,650 rounds — and stopped only when the ammunitions were nearly exhausted.” (“The last days of Reginald Dyer”). “ After they ceased firing, the troops immediately withdrew from the place, leaving behind the dead and wounded” (“Massacre Of Amritsar”). As Dyer states, he “wanted to inflict a lesson that could be felt through all India” (“Source 5”). The chaotic madness of the “slaughter of nearly 400 persons”(“Source 10”) and wounding about 1,200 people is just too much to be a lesson. This is terrible punishment for these people. We do not need this kind of negativity in our military. We support bravery and protection, not pure violence. Dyer went too far for this event to be considered a mistake. As some people say, he made “an error of judgement and was in a difficult position”(“Source 9”). That was more than just an error. People died from his “error”. It wasn't only a few people either. It was 400 people and 1,200 wounded. He hurt and changed the lives of these people. Dyer said he attacked for its “ “moral effect” on the people of the region”(“The Amritsar Massacre”). Moral effect meaning to go around killing people just to make a point until all shots are fired. What kind of moral is that? You can not “recognize terrorism as part of your weapon”(“Source 8”). What good does that do to our empire? These people were not bothering anyone. They have a life, too.“ Are you going to keep your hold on India by terrorism, racial humiliation and subordination, and frightfulness(“Source 8”)? This is outrageous. Dyer is not even from Britain which makes it worse. He is from Pakistan. This means that he was practically killing his own people and we look like the bad guys. He didn't even care about the tragedies. He just wanted to cause something “dramatic which might give him a final chance to make his name” (“Source 3”). He does have a name now. It's not a good name and surely doesn't change the fact that he ruined the lives of innocent people. Dyer's actions showed not only arrogance but true ignorance. Many people say that Dyer wasn't in his right mind during the Amritsar and had arteriosclerosis. They believe that he was in a difficult position and “aggravated by physical pain”(“Source 2”) which “rendered him liable to overreact in an emergency” (“Source 2”). “There is no evidence Dyer was suffering from arteriosclerosis at the time, and Dyer's recent brilliant performance at the relief of Thal showed that he was still alert and in full possession of his faculities”(“Source 4”). In fact, he didn't develop the disease until after the massacre in the year of 1920. Also, what emergency are people trying to refer to? The killing of all these innocent people for entertainment isn't an emergency. He had a plan and brought his rifflemen with him. He wanted to kill these people and didn't care who died, only how they died. Dyer barked orders at soldiers telling them to “take your time”(“Source 5”). He was “interested more in the technique of his soldiers than in the human tragedy”(“Source 5”). He has something wrong with him but it's not the disease. What kind of person kills for pleasure? Dyer knew what he was doing and was capable of doing it. “ He lied and changed his story until he felt sure that he had people's support”(“ The last days of Reginald Dyer”). Dyer knew he broke the law so the fact that people have sympathy for him is just wrong. What about all the indian people he killed? Where's the sympathy for them? The whole arteriosclerosis deal is just an excuse to give a murderer to make them feel good about themselves. Dyer was not the victim in this madness. He caused it and so he's the true enemy. It was definitely the right call to make General Dyer retire. He caused a massive event that killed many people and hurt the lives of the survivng families. These people have to face the horrors from this tragic event for the rest of their lives. This is worse than death. Many people blame Dyer's actions on arteriosclerosis. This was proven faulty when he had a brilliant performance at the relief of Thal. In fact, he didn't develop the disease until after the massacre in 1920. Finally, Dyer is the reason why our empire is broken. If he would not of been so arrogant and ignorant, these people wouldn't hate us so much and we would be a united empire. Because of Dyer's carelessness, he got what he deserved which is retirement from the army.
