First identify the functional group present, then determine starting point on which carbon would give you the lowest number. |dw:1461796858197:dw| For example, this is 2-pentene (can also be written as pent-2-ene) pent indicates 5 carbon atoms. -ene indicating that there is a double bond and the 2 indicating on which carbon it is on. Notice it's not 3-pentene, because 2-pentene gives you the lower number.
