For sessile animals, radial symmetry is useful because the animal can just sit there and grab food/detect threats from all directions.

For motile animals, bilateral symmetry is useful because there is always a direction of movement, and a direction that the animal has to face. The front side (that they move towards) is very useful, and the back side is... less useful :P It doesn't need as many sensors, and putting them there would be a waste of resources.
