***WILL FAN AND MEDAL*** Students are doing a project to create a new candy box for M&M's in the shape of a rectangular prism. The new candy box needs to have a volume of exactly 24cm^3. What are two possible dimensions for the box if the volume must be exactly 24cm^3? (1cm x 1cm x 18cm) and (2cm x 4cm x 3cm) (2cm x 4cm x 3cm) and (6cm x 4xm x 1cm) (2cm x 3cm x 3cm) and (1cm x 9cm x 4cm)

@Utterly_Confuzzled @TheSmartOne

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

If you multiply the different dimensions, which ones equal 24?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Do you know the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism? Just check each option. which one has both of the choices =24?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do 1 x 1 x 18 then do 2 x 4 x 3 and then add the 2 values?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

1x1x18 = ? 2x3x4 = ? 6x4x1 = ? 2x3x3 = ? 9x4x1 = ?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

You shouldn't need to add them. Just multiply each set individually and there is one answer where both options equal 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 x 1 x 18 = 18 2 x 3 x 4 = 24 6 x 4 x 1 = 24 2 x 3 x 3 = 18 9 x 4 x 1 = 36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so B is the answer?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Right. The only 2 that equal 24 are 2x3x4 and 6x4x1 so whichever answer choice has both of those is your answer Right, B is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! That was easier then I expected. XD :P

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

I'm glad!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I might need help on another question too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Calculate the surface area of the two boxes above using the formula: SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh. Which of the two boxes has the larger surface area? A B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So do we do 29 x 3 x 2 and then just keep going?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

On the first on, lets say that l=8, w=6, h=22, can you plug those values into the formula to see what you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure hold on

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

That will give you the SA for the first box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 2 x 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im sorry I get kinda confused.

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

2x8x6 + 2x8x22 + 2x6x22 = SA

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

It's fine, there is no need to apologize!

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Do you see how I got that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Kinda-ish XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me try it out

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

And on the second triangle, if we assign l=29, w=16, h=23 Since SA= 2xlxw + 2xlxh +2xwxh , SA = 2x29x16 +2x29x23 +2x16x23 Does that make anymore sense seeing it step by step? I know it can get confusing someimes!

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Okay!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the surface area for the A is 264?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

I got 712

OpenStudy (anonymous):

... ._.

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Because 2x8x6 = 96 2x8x22 = 352 2x6x22= 264 And you add those together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops sorry I typed the wrong thing

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

It happens!

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Can you see if you can get the second one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea its 712

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k hold on

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Okay!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the SA for B. is 2,998?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Exactly!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YAY

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So B. is the answer.

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Correct!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

You're welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I could give you another medal. :P

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

Seriously, don't worry about it, I'm just happy I was able to help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

XD Otay :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):
