OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

I need a "SIMPLE" explanation of "what is a sampling distribution?"

OpenStudy (airjordan200):

A sampling distribution is a probability distribution of a statistic obtained through a large number of samples drawn from a specific population.

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

thats what google said as well, but can we shorten this up

OpenStudy (airjordan200):

ok ima shorten it up

OpenStudy (airjordan200):

do you know what sampling is?

OpenStudy (airjordan200):

The methodology used to sample from a larger population will depend on the type of analysis being performed, but will include simple random sampling, systematic sampling and observational sampling.

OpenStudy (airjordan200):

Look at sampling distrution like this.Suppose you randomly sampled 10 people from the population of women in Houston, Texas, between the ages of 21 and 35 years and computed the mean height of your sample. You would not expect your sample mean to be equal to the mean of all women in Houston. It might be somewhat lower or it might be somewhat higher, but it would not equal the population mean exactly. Similarly, if you took a second sample of 10 people from the same population, you would not expect the mean of this second sample to equal the mean of the first sample.

OpenStudy (thomas5267):

I could not give a simple explanation but I hope this link is simple enough. http://onlinestatbook.com/2/sampling_distributions/intro_samp_dist.html
