The French had been trying to reestablish their colony in Vietnam after WWII. Dien Bien Phu was the final battle that kicked the French out. The Viet Minh were communist. They took over after the French left. The embarrassment to the French was part of troubles that made it's government fall in 1958. The Viet Minh control of Vietnam got the attention of the US. Under the Truman Doctrine, we wanted to contain Communism and oppose it's growth. So that battle also set up conditions where the US would support the South Vietnamese who opposed the Viet Minh
