What Do I Have To Do?
Prepare for the Project
Before we jump into creating this module’s project, take a few moments to fill in this S.P.R.I.T.E. chart. It will help you gather all the information you will need to complete your project.
Project Directions:
Have you ever tried to convince people to agree with you? Has anyone ever tried to convince you to see their side? If so you have been exposed to the art of persuasion. Persuasion is a process aimed at changing a person’s ideas and thoughts.
Task:
You have been assigned to write a persuasive piece for the school paper. Your job is to persuade your readers to believe in one of the following ideas.
Belief #1: Asia made more contributions to society than Africa.
Belief #2: Africa made more contributions to society than Asia.
Process:
Step #1: Review the information that you gathered in your S.P.R.I.T.E. Chart. Based on the gathered information choose either Belief #1 or Belief #2 to use when writing your persuasive piece.
Step #2: Now that you have chosen your Belief, take a few minutes to review Level One of the Persuasive Writing LO. This will prepare you to write your persuasive piece.
Step #3: Congratulations on completing the Persuasive Writing LO. You should now know all of the parts that are needed to write your persuasive piece. It is now time to begin writing. Remember your job is to persuade your audience to share your Belief. As you are writing your piece you may want to review the Persuasive Writing LO to make sure you have included all of the important parts of a persuasive piece.
Your completed project should be at least three paragraphs in length. A paragraph is four to six sentences. Each paragraph should include the following:
• Paragraph 1- Should contain an introduction that introduces the topic and explains that some people believe Asia made more contributions to society and some people believe that Africa made more contributions to society.
• Paragraph 2- Should contain a claim that states your belief that either Asia or Africa made more contributions to society. One reason why you consider your belief to be true and evidence that supports your belief. You also need to include one counter claim and give a reason why the other society did not make more contributions than your chosen society.
• Paragraph 3- Should contain your conclusion. The conclusion should review your reasons and ask the reader to share your belief.
