ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
@rebeccaxhawaii
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
@sweetburger @IrishBoy123
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
A=L*W
Let say width is (2x+5) and length is (2x+6)
A=(2x+5)(2x+6)
We want the area to equal 31
so
(2x+5)(2x+6)=31
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
then just expand the left side

OpenStudy (sweetburger):
You know the formula for the area of a rectangle?
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
lw
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
So whats the length of the painting and the boarder
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
5 and 6?

6+2x?
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
yes 6+2x
so what is the width?
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
5+2x
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
So what is length times the width
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
5+2x*6+2x

Yes now you need to expand that
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
expand?
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
do you know what FOIL is?
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
front outer inner last?
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
oh its like a distribute thing i remember

OpenStudy (sweetburger):
Yes exactly
OpenStudy (sweetburger):
Its distribution in the order of First Outer Inner Last
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
yes, so I am distributing (2x+5)(2x+6)=31?
OpenStudy (welshfella):
yes
OpenStudy (welshfella):
So 2x( 2x + 6) + 5(2x + 6) = 31

ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
oh yes, like that
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
do we change it into standard form or something
OpenStudy (welshfella):
just expand the expressions on the left then subtract 31 from both sides. then a little more simplifying will give you a quadratic eqquation
ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):
IDK what expanding means :( is it just foil?
OpenStudy (agent0smith):
Expand is a much much more correct word for FOIL.
(x + y + z)(3x + 2y + z)
You can expand this. You cannot first inner outer last this.

So from the point
(2x+5)(2x+6) when you expand it you get 4x^2+22x+30 =31. Now you need to get it set equal to 0.
