OpenStudy (adalrymple):

If lines a and b are parallel, and measure of angle J equals x plus twenty degrees and measure of angle K equals three x, what is the value of x? Two parallel lines, a and b, intersected by transversal, t. The angles where a and t intersect are labeled J, K, L, and M starting in the upper left and moving clockwise. The corresponding angles where b and t intersect are labeled N, P, R, and Q starting in the upper left and moving clockwise. I will put a picture of the graph

We know that a straight line is 180 degrees so \[J+k=180\] Plug in J and K \[(x+20)+(3x)=180\] Simplify \[4x+20=180\] Subtract 20 on both sides \[(4x+20)-20=(180)-20\] to get \[4x=160\] Divide by 4 on both sides \[(4x)/4=(160)/4\] to get \[x=40\] :)
