Opium, England was paying out too much of its gold reserves to china for it's tea so to overcome this the clipper ships that picked up the tea from china were filed up with opium to trade for the tea instead of gold. Eventually when china became aware of the damage this was doing to its people and economy they tried to stop this practice leading to the opium wars. Which item contributed most to England's trade deficit with China? Tea
