The stem-and-leaf plot below shows the total number of points different gymnasts earned in a gymnastics competition. How many gymnasts scored less than 50 points?

OpenStudy (bmk614):

What stem-and-leaf plot?

OpenStudy (newarf):

stem leaf 6 1226 5 1 4 6 8 9 4 122789 3 6 9

OpenStudy (maddielb):

@newarf I'm guessing you don't know how to read these?

OpenStudy (newarf):

yes I have forgotten how to read these

OpenStudy (maddielb):

Alright so, do you see the 5 on the steam part?

OpenStudy (newarf):

yes

OpenStudy (maddielb):

So that is a 5 as in 51, 54, 56, 58, and 59. So basically if you need to find the scores less than 50 you need to look at the stem numbers less than 5. So 41, 42, 42, 47, 48, 49, 36, and 39 are all less than a score of 50. And the second part of the 41-49 is the number on the leaf part of the table. As well as the 36 and 39. You get the 6 and 9 from the leaf part.

OpenStudy (maddielb):

So how many scores are less than 50?

OpenStudy (newarf):

8

OpenStudy (maddielb):

Correct

OpenStudy (newarf):

thanks
