No, the 3-2WIDTH = the LENGTH, not the area :) Try again!
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
im not exaclty sure on any other way to set it up :( @asett
OpenStudy (asett):
That's okay! :)
So, we know that 2w-3=l
We also know the area: 14m^2=l*w. So, now you just have to substitute in an equation and solve!
OpenStudy (asett):
Does that make sense?

ok let me figure this out lol
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
14m^2=2w-3 ?
OpenStudy (asett):
Good, but don't forget your other w in that equation:
14=(2w-3)w
Also, drop your units. :)
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
so then it would be 14=2w^2-3w?
OpenStudy (asett):
Good! Now, move your 14 to the other side using algebra

0=2w^2-3w-14
OpenStudy (asett):
Good, now factor!
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
w=-2, 7/2?
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
@asett
OpenStudy (asett):
Good, now we know that we can never have a negative measurement, right? So we drop the -2 and are left with 3.5. Now solve for L

2(3.5)-3=l ?
l=4?
OpenStudy (shelbywyatt):
yes
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
@asett
OpenStudy (asett):
Wel, it would be, but when we plug those values into to the second equation to check our answer, I get 28. Not 14 like we should. Like me check our math...
OpenStudy (shelbywyatt):
well 3.5*2-=4?

14=w*(w2-3)?
OpenStudy (asett):
We want 14 to equal L times W.
14=w*(2w-3) btw :)
OpenStudy (shelbywyatt):
oh yeah
OpenStudy (barrelracing):
so l isnt 4? is w 3.5?
OpenStudy (asett):
Oh my word. Thank you. Yes. w=3.5 and l=4. That solves the problem!! :D
