Native Americans, African American slaves, free African Americans, and European colonists lived in America in 1776. 

The British were the largest of the European colonists, but there were significant amounts of German colonists, Scots-Irish colonists and Dutch colonists. There were of course smaller numbers of colonists from other cultural backgrounds as well.
