to do long division rewrite the expression as

4x^3 + 0x^2 + 6x - 5


then divide 4x^3 by 2x which gives 2x^2

then multiply 2x - 2 by 2x^2 to give 4x^3 - 4x^2 and subtract this from 4x^3 + 0 x?^2
