OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

A football team lost 9 yards on its first play. It then gained 9 yards on its second play. A. What expression can be written to represent how many yards the football team is from where it started? Explain your reasoning. B. How many yards is the football team from where it started? C. Suppose that, instead, the football team had gained 9 yards on its first play and lost 9 yards on its second play. Would the team’s position on the field have been any different than it actually was after the first two plays? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

@Directrix @FortyTheRapper @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`A football team lost 9 yards on its first play` so would that be a positive change in yardage? or negative change?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

i guess negative? i dont really know

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep negative because of the loss

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so if you lost 9 yards, then we can write that as `-9` imagine starting at 0 on the number line. Losing 9 yards will have you go to the left 9 spots to land on `-9`

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

so can u kinda put it all together for me:):)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what number is associated with gaining 9 yards?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

no i mean like the steps it tells me to do can u kinda like show me that:) pleaseeee

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm going through the steps now. What number is associated with gaining 9 yards?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

-9 i guess

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-9 was losing yards

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

+9 or just 9 itself is gaining nine yards

OpenStudy (first_world_problems):

LOSS IS ALLWAYS NEGITIVE GAIN IS ALWAYS POSITIVE

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

so where are we going with this??? can u please write down everything we have did so far please!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should be writing this down in your notes and on the hw page do you see how I'm getting these two values?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

what r u talking about

OpenStudy (kameron018):

Hes trying to teach you, not just give you the answer. Follow along!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how -9 represents a loss of nine yards?

OpenStudy (i_ask_alot):

im not trying to get the answer i want to retrace the steps we just did so that we r on the same page

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

here's a similar example let's say we start at 0 on the number line. The value 0 is where the line of scrimmage is |dw:1463116080903:dw|
