OpenStudy (myersra):

this question is about World War 2. Where did the Us strike first once they joined the war effort?

OpenStudy (deving7240):

Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean against Japan.

OpenStudy (fmorrison42):

Wake Island, as Deving said, was the first major engagement of mass troops against Japanese Forces. However, there were several contingents and detachments of forces across the Pacific, mostly clustered around the Philippines. They chose Wake due to its proximity to both Hawaii and Japan. It was already 'controlled' by the US after Pearl Harbor, but when the Japanese were drawing close, there were more planes and ships sent at full speed to assist in the efforts. Sadly it was another glaring defeat for the American Forces. After that, they changed their tactics to the Island Hopping Campaign with the US Marines. Their first major assault and overwhelming victory was on a tiny island called Guadalcanal.
