OpenStudy (zarkon):

Is my Hard Drive dying

OpenStudy (zarkon):

I have an old computer and it is slowing down. I did a benchmark and got For a sequential I got Read 66.2 Write 63.1 Mixed 57.7 47% 62.3 MB/s But for random 4k I got 4K Read 0.04 4K Write 0.1 4K Mixed 0.04 8% 0.06 MB/s What do you think

OpenStudy (unicorns-):

I think so.

OpenStudy (latinc):

things that slow down your computer; a virus can slow down your computer, having too many programs running in the background can slow down your computer, not having enough memory can slow your computer :(

OpenStudy (latinc):

possible solutions; turn off programs running in the background that you don't use like creative cloud or OneDrive sync/ google drive sync, buy a usb drive (1gb max) and use it as a "ready boost" options (this will greatly increase your boot up speed), make sure your computer is not over heating or is dusty, or upgrade to a new processor like an i5 or i7 because I'm assuming your running something similar to an i3 or below.

Ok now for a real computer person to answer...

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

give me about an hour to type thos out

OpenStudy (blackhawk23):

hey i have an alen were with windows 10 i feel your pain man

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

Ok, from the looks of it the hard drive may be giving out but other issues may also be occuring. First, lets diagnose a couple of things, if all tests backup this, then your going to want to buy a new hardrive at your earliest convience, and transfer ALL data onto the drive. Clone it, and replace the drive. First i want to confirm there is no malicious stuff potentially effecting your computers performance, I want you to go to http://malwarebytes.org, and I want you to download the trial version of the program. (or buy it, your choice /shrug, though if you use the trial, just remember to do daily scans, because it doesnt live protect :) ) Alright, next thing is i want you to run a threat scan, when it is done, if there is no unwanted items detected, your good to go to the next step, otherwise alert me and i will guide you with what to do next. Next thing you will do is a system diagnostic. Windows 10 instructions: search for "windows memory diagnostic" and run that program. Thats memory, now to check the hard drive navigate to "this pc" or "my computer" depending upon your windows version. Right click on the C:// drive (assuming you only have 1 hard drive) click propertys. navigate to the tools tab in the propertys window. Before you check for errors, i want you to use the disk deframentation tool, you disk may be very fragmented. After doing that, see if you notice any cosiderable differences, if you still have issues, then run the error check tool. check to see if you are still having the same issues. if the problem is fixed, great, if not, onto the next step. Well... Time to buy a new hard drive and transfer your data before it completly gives out.

OpenStudy (zarkon):

Hi, I already use malwarebytes (among others) and there does not appear to be any malware on the system. The memory was fine. I analysed the drive this morning and it was 0% fragmented I ran the disk scan for errors yesterday...Said it didn't have any errors. I'm pretty sure the HDD is just getting old. (I don't remember when I got this PC...it is not my primary PC)

OpenStudy (latinc):

amazon has cheap laptops and PCs

OpenStudy (latinc):

@Zarkon are you running more than one antivirus/malware software

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

Then it looks like the hardrive is just old, and needs to be replaced, ah oh well, happens to the best of us, lol.

OpenStudy (zarkon):

@latinC I am running only one that is an active scan. I run others on a periodic basis to possibly catch what my primary protection might miss.

OpenStudy (latinc):

I'd buy a new laptop/PC and keep my old laptop/PC to download software/music/videos/etc...
