Grant went on to defeat Robert E. Lee after another series of costly battles in the Overland Campaign, Petersburg, and Appomattox. General Grant’s total war strategy, which became fairly public knowledge after the end of the Civil War, painted him as a charismatic and strong leader who was willing to take risks, which appealed to voters. After a series of decisive yet costly battles and victories at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga, Grant was promoted to Lieutenant General by President Lincoln in 1864 and given charge of all the Union Armies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_S._Grant_and_the_American_Civil_War
