Type of soil is dependent on the proportion of three constituents, namely, sand, silt and clay-expressed in percentage along the three sides of the triangle in the figure. From the figure, you can say what proportion of the constituents would make a specific kind of soil. In Judy's case in the figure, silty clay (represented as blue triangle)-the soil type she deduced- must have had a composition in the range of 40-60% silt (from the right side of the triangle), 40-60% clay (from the left side of the triangle) and 20-40% sand (from the base of the triangle).
