One of the darker actions we discussed in this unit was murder. Murder was the main theme in a few of the stories that we read this morning. To Me, the theme of murder was the most prominent in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. This story was about A man, Rainsford, that fell overboard his yacht ended up on a strange island. He ends up finding a house and the person that owns the island. His name is General Zaroff, and he invites Rainsford into his house for dinner when Rainsford discovers a sickening secret. General Zaroff likes to hunt humans for sport.
General Zaroff had hunted pretty much and animal that could be hunted and he was growing tired of not being able to find anything challenging to hunt. He wanted something that would challenge him more than any regular animal could, so he started hunting humans and murdering them. General Zaroff could’ve overcome this darker action by doing a few different things. One thing he could've done would be to just stop hunting all together. If he couldn't find anything that would satisfy him, he could just find something new to do that isn't hunting. Another thing he could of done, is just keep looking for new animals to hunt that aren't humans. He could travel to new places that he hadn't traveled before and hope to find new prey.
If General Zaroff decided not to hunt humans, a number of things would be different. One example of this would be if he didn't hunt at all. If he didn't hunt at all, Rainsford wouldn't of heard gunshots while passing the island, so he wouldn't of been curious and fallen overboard and become stranded on the island. Things would still be different though, even if he did still hunt things besides humans. There would still be a chance that Rainsford would still hear gunshots and fall overboard, but General Zaroff probably wouldn't react the way he did. He would probably still invite him in for dinner and give him a place to sleep, but he obviously wouldn't make Rainsford play the game with him of hunting. General Zaroff probably would also help Rainsford locate his yacht and help him get off of the island and where he wanted to go. The biggest thing that wouldn't happen would be that General Zaroff probably wouldn't die in the end.
